Milestone Announcement: ODA Completes TG5 — VoWiFi over Cellular (Enhanced Backup Calling) for Private Cellular Networks
The Open Device Alliance is proud to announce the completion of the full Task Group 5 (TG5) document suite: Requirements, Technical Specification, Compliance Matrix, and Test Specification — covering VoWiFi over Cellular (Enhanced Backup Calling) for enterprise private cellular network (NPN) deployments.
Currently adding voice and messaging in Private Cellular Networks require additional HW, SW, provisioning, numbering, regulatory obligations, coordination, cost, and resources to deploy and manage.
By solving the functionality gap from the device perspective vs a MOCN or IMS based solution by leveraging the existing WiFi / backup calling functionality this addresses the IMS registration, ePDG/N3IWF selection, and security concerns without requiring MOCN peering or additional 4G/5G core network elements. The enterprise is able to rapidly deploy voice and messaging without incurring additional costs, assigned resources, or long-term operational overhead.
This directly improves enterprise productivity, worker safety, and mission-critical communications continuity in facilities where private cellular coverage is the preferred connectivity method.
